Apple Pay likely to launch in UK on July 14

LONDON: It looks like Apple Pay will be launching in the UK on July 14. Mac’s Mark Gurman has got his hands on what appears to be an internal memo from supermarket Waitrose saying that Apple’s cardless payment scheme will launch in Britain later this month.

Apple Pay is already available in the US, and it lets users pay for items at contactless payment terminals using only their iPhone or Apple Watch. Apple Pay is reliant on tokenization technology, which has slowly been switched on by payment services providers including Global Payments and Visa — paving the wave for the UK launch.

According to Digital Spy, eight major British banks will support Apple Pay — but Barclays is still in negotiations. Initially, Apple Pay transactions will be capped at £20 per transaction — much like other contactless payment methods. But this limited will be raised in the Autumn, according to one of Gurman’s sources.

Business Insider has reached out to Apple and Waitrose for comment, and will update when they respond.
