CALIFORNIA: Apple has been in the news for the wrong reasons many times in the past. Last year we saw the Bendgate, Hairgate, Crescentgate controversies. Looks like Apple still has some more questions to answer this year.
According to the Verge, in a legal complaint filed in California, Miami residents Paul Orshan and Christopher Endara have stated that the 16GB iPhones and iPads that they purchased was offering less usable storage space than was promised. According to Orshan, this space was further reduced when the iPhone 5S was upgraded from iOS 7 to iOS 8.
According to the complaint, the storage space available for iPhone 5s is 16GB of which only 12.2GB is usable to the user, which means that around 18.1% is not usable, as that is taken up by system memory. On the other hand the out of the 16GB space on the iPad, only 11.7GB is available to the user. That’s around 21.3% of unavailable space.
“Apple touts iOS 8 as ‘The biggest iOS release ever.’ Of course, Apple is not referring to the literal size of iOS 8, which appears to be entirely undisclosed in its voluminous marketing materials extolling the purported virtues of iOS 8,” says the complaint.
The complaint also accuses Apple of trying to push users to using its paid iCloud storage for things like photos, documents and so on. It also goes on to blame Apple for not working with third-party storage vendors and desktop transfer utilities for customers who want to offload their files.
“To put this in context, each gigabyte of storage Apple shortchanges its customers amounts to approximately 400-500 high resolution photographs,” says the complainant.
Apple has yet to comment on the complaint. But if the past is any indicator, Apple might just blame the users for not optimally using the storage.
