TUCUMAN: Blueberry exports from Tucuman will start early this year because of climate issues. Fernando Martorell, from the promotion of exports area of the Institute of productive development (IDEP), said fruit exports abroad could begin at the end of this month.
“We are entering a stage in which the blueberry sector of the province will start exporting strongly so we are working and trying to be ready like every year. The private sector has stated that operations, which usually started in October, would most probably be starting by September 20th this year,” he said.
“It is quite possible that the campaign could start a few days earlier because of the temperatures we’re having, but we also need the weather to be good throughout the months of the campaign and not having rain or any other climate issue that may affect us,” he said.
Martorell said that the private sector had good prospects for the fruit’s quality this year. “So far, climate issues have been good, there was no frost in the winter months and we are already preparing everything regarding the logistics as much of work takes place in the airport and with all the control agencies,” he stressed.
“We have been maintaining permanent meetings, not only with customs, Senasa, and the USDA, but also with the Secretary of Labor. We also met with the Lieutenant Governor Juan Manzur, to discuss all of these issues and see how we could improve them every year”, he stated.
He also said he hoped that this year the blueberry sector would obtain a higher volume of fruit. “That will demand us to work harder at the airport and we’ll see if we can meet that demand,” he said.
The official stated that the exporting logistics was similar to that of previous years. “The idea is to export as much fruit from Tucumán, both to the United States and to the European Union, whether by direct flights or through San Pablo with regional flights, and then redistribute them from San Pablo to the European Union and United States,” he said.
Auspicious season
The Argentine Blueberry Committee said that the 2015 season would be very auspicious for the production and exportation of blueberries in the country. For this season, estimates are there will be a 5% increase in volumes from 2014, when total exports amounted to 16,232 tons.
