LONDON: Thanksgiving is a time of thankfulness and gathering and astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) celebrated the occasion but in their own unique way. Although the astronauts didn’t celebrate Thanksgiving on earth, in space it was a lot like holiday on earth.

NASA astronauts Scott Kelly and Kjell Lindgren celebrated Thanksgiving on November 26 by taking out some time out from their busy schedule to spend their day watching football. The astronauts also enjoyed a turkey-centric feast at the space station, the agency officials said.

Both the astronauts even sent a special Thanksgiving video this week. The video showed the astronauts breaking out bags of smoked turkey, rehydratable corn, candied yams and potatoes au gratin.

Lindgren in the video wished viewers a happy Thanksgiving and said that he is very thankful to his family, friends and several thousands of people at NASA who have made his mission aboard the ISS possible.

“We don’t have much of this stuff, so I hope he enjoys that, because that was his Thanksgiving dinner right there”, Kelly said.

Lindgren laughed when Kelly sampled the candied yams, squeezing a healthy glob of orange goop out of a clear plastic bag. Kelly while enjoying the yams said they are very delicious.

Towards the end of the video, both wished happy Thanksgiving to all and performed a backflip. Lindgren waved and then did a forward somersault.

According to the American space agency NASA, Kelly and Lindgren are presently sharing the orbiting lab with four other astronauts named Kimiya Yui from Japan, cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko, Oleg Kononenko and Sergey Volkov.
