WASHINGTON: Asustek Computer will be able to ship a total of 20.5 million smartphones in 2015, meeting its shipment target set for the year, according to company CEO Jerry Shen.
The company shipped 13.5 million smartphones in the first three quarters of 2015 and will ship another seven million units in the fourth quarter, Shen said. Asustek expects its smartphone shipments to grow 46% to reach 30 million units in 2016, Shen estimated.
Asustek will also adjust its smartphone development strategy and will keep the number of new models launched in 2016 in a single-digit range, said Shen, referring to the numerous ZenFone models released in 2015.
Intel- and Qualcomm-based models will account for 80% of smartphones launched in 2015, and MediaTek-based models make up the remaining 20%, Shen noted. In 2016, the ratio of Qualcomm-based models will be ramped up, while Intel’s CPUs will be used in premium models and MediaTek’s models will remain at 20%.
