WASHINGTON: Jamaica Customs Agency says efficiencies have improved since the implementation of ASYCUDA World, despite criticisms from customs brokers and freight forwarders. In a release this afternoon, Commissioner of Customs Velma Rickets Walker said the agency has seen significant improvement in the use of the advance manifest, which is available 24 hours prior to the arrival of a vessel, and 15 minutes after take-off for aircraft.
The advance manifest allows clients to submit declarations for advanced risk assessment, allowing for real-time routing of declarations to the various electronic lanes for pre-clearance processing. It says the implementation of the system has resulted in reduced costs for importers and a reduction in the time required to clear goods. However, she says the agency is mindful that there are challenges in some areas.
