ATHEX: Local stocks head south

ATHENS: It took just a day of losses for the Greek bourse benchmark to see the gains earned in the previous four sessions wiped out.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed on Thursday at 576.58 points, shedding 1.65 percent from Wednesday’s 586.24 points. The FTSE 25 index contracted 2.31 percent to end at 1,524.14 points.

Banks led the drop with losses of 3.84 percent, as Alpha fell 5.39 percent and Piraeus Bank 4.11 percent. In total 38 stocks advanced, 51 declined and 16 stayed put. Turnover climbed to 35.1 million euros from Wednesday’s 29.2 million. The general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange in Nicosia fell 0.08 percent, closing at 66.61 points.
