ATHEX: Stocks rise 0.74 percent on worryingly low turnover

ATHENS: The disturbingly low turnover was the main feature of the month’s first trading session at Athinon Avenue, while banks helped push the benchmark up more than four points, with some support from OPAP gaming company.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 569.72 points, adding 0.74 percent to Friday’s 565.53 points. The FTSE 25 index expanded 0.99 percent to end at 1,515.75 points, while mid-caps contracted 0.35 percent.

Banks jumped 1.77 percent as Eurobank rose 3.15 and Alpha gained 2.70 percent. Mytilineos was up 3.37 percent, Allaktor increased 3.20 percent, Grivalia Properties climbed 2.99 percent and OPAP improved 2.66 percent. Viohalco gave up 2.40 percent and Hellenic Petroleum conceded 1.52 percent.

In total 56 stocks posted gains, 36 recorded losses and 24 ended unchanged.

Turnover was the second lowest of the year, after that registered on August 17. It amounted to 14.9 million euros, down from last Friday’s 37.5 million. In Nicosia the general index of the Cyprus Stock Exchange rose 0.20 percent to close at 66.29 points.
