SYDNEY: Audi’s all-new TT Coupe touches goes on sale in Australia, ahead of TT Roadster and TTS performance model launches due to occur in the coming year.
Kicking off from $71,950 plus on-roads, the new TT Coupe range is powered by a 169kW/370Nm 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine.
Those stats should make the new TT a more appealing offer for fans and newcomers alike, representing a 44kW/20Nm increase and a $2250 reduction against the equivalent model in the previous range.
This means however that the overall cost of entry into the TT range is up – with the outgoing series opened by a $69,350 1.8 litre model – but Audi will likely be looking to the new model’s ‘bang for buck’ to pull customers into showrooms.
Internationally, the new TT can also be had with a 135kW/380Nm diesel, although Audi’s local arm has confirmed it does not currently have any plans to offer that variant.
POWERTRAINS
The TT’s new 2.0 litre four-cylinder turbocharged ‘TFSI’ engine, shared with the new Golf GTI, lists power figures of 169kW and 370Nm of torque.
Audi claims a 0-100km/h time of 6.0 seconds in six-speed manual and front-wheel-drive form, and 5.3 seconds for S tronic and quattro-equipped models.
Fuel consumption is listed at 5.9 l/100km with the manual model and 6.3 l/100km with the auto, although that climbs slightly to 6.4 with the quattro model.
Six-speed manual and seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch auto transmissions are available across the range, with the latter adding a $3000 premium.
And, while the entry models are front-wheel-drive, Quattro all-wheel-drive can be optioned for a further $3000 spend.
Quattro models also benefit from a new ‘intelligence of quattro drive’ setup, which sees torque distribution measured out by a new software system.
There are new aluminium components in the suspension system for reduced unsprung mass, and the TTS again benefits from magnetic-ride adjustable damping as standard.
Steering is by a progressive variable-ratio electric system.
DIMENSIONS & STORAGE
As with its second-generation predecessor, the new TT is larger than ever, growing through the wheelbase and in overall length.
The wheelbase is now 37mm longer than the 2468mm stretch of the previous model, but with shorter overhangs at both ends.
Overall length has grown to 4191mm, compared to 4178mm in the second generation and 4041mm with the first.
Despite being larger overall than its predecessor, the use of the Volkswagen Group’s new MQB platform and new Audi-specific materials, the new TT is between 50 and 90 kilograms lighter than before.
Audi has added 13 litres of boot space over the previous model, giving the coupe’s owners 305 litres to fill. Inside, the familiar four-seat arrangement carries over in ‘2+2’ style.
