NEW DELHI: Audi has introduced the third generation of the TT sports car in India, for Rs 60.34 lakhs. The new TT is based on a modified version of Volkswagen’s MQB platform. The company says the platform uses a lot of aluminium, helping shaving off 50 kg from the second-generation model. Under its hood lies the 2.0-litre, high compression TFSI engine. Audi says the TFSI engine delivers more power while using less fuel and producing fewer emissions. A power output of 169 kW (227 bhp) enables the new TT to accelerate from 0-100 kmph in a mere 5.3 seconds, before taking it to a top speed of 250 kmph. The engine is mated to the S tronic six-speed dual-clutch transmission which allows for shorter gear-change times and changes gear with virtually no perceptive break in propulsive power. In India, the new TT will compete against sports cars such as the Porsche Boxster, BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK.

The TT was first shown as a concept car at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show. Production and global sales began in 1998. In 2006, the second-generation of the TT was introduced globally, and in March 2012 in India. In 2014, the third-generation of the car was launched globally. It entered India this Thursday.

The Audi TT takes its name from the successful motor racing tradition of the NSU in the British Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle race. NSU used to be a German auto manufacturer which was acquired by Volkswagen in 1969. The company was then merged with another company called the Auto Union, which eventually evolved into Audi.
