INGOLSTADT: Audi has launched a new lighting competence center in Ingolstadt, Germany with hope to lead the world of automotive li9ghting technology.

The new center consists of a 120 meter-long underground light tunnel, which cars can be driven into in order to test technologies like adaptive high beams and camera‑based lighting assistance systems. The matt‑black‑painted tunnel, the largest of its kind in Europe, is located underneath an eleven-floor building, which presented a challenge as engineers had to build it without using supporting columns.

“Audi is the leading brand for automotive lighting technology,” stated Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management for Technical Development. “From the xenon plus headlight to the matrix‑LED headlight to the laser light, we have been putting pioneering innovations into series production for the past 20 years. Light is part of an automobile’s esthetics and is becoming an interactive medium of information.”
