SYDNEY: Two women have been arrested for allegedly being involved in a ‘highly organised’ syndicate transporting the drug ice into the Northern Territory.
As part of task force Nemesis, a woman was arrested for allegedly trying to conceal ice within the wrappers of Ferrero Rocher chocolates.
The 46-year-old was found in possession of 500 grams of the drug as she arrived in Darwin on a flight from Sydney on Saturday.
Northern Territory Police Superintendent Kris Evans said officers searched the woman’s luggage and found methamphetamine inside the popular chocolate wrappers.
The woman will now appear in Darwin Magisrates Court on November 18 charged with supply of methamphetamine – commercial quantity, possession of ice and possession of a thing to administer a dangerous drug.
A second woman was caught by police before she boarded a flight to Sydney at Darwin Airport on Monday.
The 57-year-old was allegedly found in possession of $55,000 and a search was carried out at her home in Rosebery, south Sydney, where police located 165 grams of ice.
The woman was charged with several offences including supply, possession, and conspiring to commit a crime with another.
Following these arrests, New South Wales Police executed a search warrant at a home in Rhodes, Sydney, and seized 1,000 grams of an amphetamine type stimulant suspected to be methamphetamine, and a quantity of suspected precursor.
Police will allege both females were involved in a highly organised syndicate transporting methamphetamine into the Northern Territory.
‘We are extremely pleased with the result of this investigation,’ said Superintendent Evans.
‘Methamphetamine is a destructive drug that destroys the lives of the vulnerable and the loved ones around them.
‘Law enforcement agencies will continue to work closely together to remove methamphetamine from our community before it had an opportunity to cause harm.’
