Australian stocks jump at open, S&P 200 surges 17pts

MELBOURNE: The Australian market looks set to open higher, taking a lead from positive performances on European bourses with Wall Street closed for the Thanksgiving public holiday.

At 0645 AEDT on Friday, the December share price index futures contract was up 22 points at 5,248.

Locally, in economic news on Friday, the Australia Bureau of Statistics releases September quarter figures for Private New Capital Expenditure and Expected Expenditure.

Meanwhile, federal treasurer Scott Morrison is slated to speak at a superannuation conference in Sydney.

The Australian Export Awards are on in Melbourne.

In equities news, Oroton Group, Skydive the Beach, Regional Express, and Premier Investments have their annual general meetings.

In Australia, the market on Thursday retreated from one per cent gains to end modestly higher, boosted by the banking sector but pulled down by resources stocks.

The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was was up 17 points, or 0.33 per cent, at 5,210.7.

The broader All Ordinaries index was up 14.5 points, or 0.28 per cent, at 5,259.7.
