Austrian unemployment in August sees 1.1% increase

VIENNA: Unemployment in Austria for the month of August has continued on its upward trend, increasing 1.1 percent or 4,039 people year-over-year to reach 388,624 people without work.

The figures released by the Ministry of Social Affairs on Thursday show that calculated nationally however, the overall unemployment rate remains unchanged on 8.3 percent. They nonetheless mark five years of steadily-increasing unemployment for the central-European country.

Despite the overall increase, the number of unemployed Austrian nationals, the figures for which includes those engaged in a form of further schooling, in fact saw a 2.1 percent drop down to 276,695 persons over the past year.

Foreign nationals however saw a significant 9.9 percent increase in their number of unemployed, rising to 111,929 persons. Further, the number of unemployed asylum seekers and other persons granted a form of subsidiary protection increased 44 percent since August 2015, to reach 25,819 persons.
