DHAKA: Japanese Oriental Consultants Global Company Ltd will provide consultancy for the construction of dual- gauge railway tracks over the river Jamuna.
According to details, the cabinet committee on public purchase gave its approval to the proposal on Wednesday at its regular meeting held at the Bangladesh Secretariat with finance minister AMA Muhith in the chair.
The total cost of the railway project is estimated at over Tk 97.34 billion. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will provide Tk 77.24 billion as loan for the project. The rest of Tk 2,010 billion will come from the Bangladesh government.
The Japanese company will get over Tk 7.89 billion for consultancy for the construction of railway lines on the Bangabandhu Railway Bridge over the river Jamuna.
The estimated length of the railway bridge is 4.8 kilometre. The construction work will start in the current fiscal year and is expected to complete in 2023.
The bridge, which will be largest rail bridge in the country, will open up a new horizon in the country’s communications system, which will ensure speedy communication between the capital and other parts of the country.
Additional Secretary of the cabinet division Md Mostafizur Rhaman briefed the media after the meeting. He said apart from Oriental, two local and one Japanese company will work with the Oriental.
The other projects that the cabinet committee on public purchase approved are: Appointing TS Transformer Ltd for supplying 23,893 transformers at a cost of over Tk 1.80 billion as part of the ongoing rural electrification project that will connect 1.5 million customers and purchasing of SPC Pole at a cost of Tk1.20 billion.
