DHAKA: Bangladesh Customs Intelligence officials have seized a luxury Porsche car abandoned at Hatirjheel in the capital.
Its owner left a note in the car, requesting the authorities ‘not to pursue the person’, Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) Director General Moinul Khan said.
According to the CIID chief, the individual said in the note that he or she is a ‘respectable person’ and did not want the identity to be disclosed.
The CIID, however, is not paying any heed to the request for the reprieve by the owner.
Referring to the documents on the car, the directorate’s Deputy Director Sharif Al Hasan said that an expatriate, identified as Farid Rashid, imported the car under ‘Carnet de Passage’ facility in 2010.
Sharif said the estimated cost of the Porsche Cayenne 955 of 2005 is Tk40 million.
“We will start investigation by checking Rashid’s address first,” he added.
Under the ‘Carnet de Passage’ facility, tourists can enter Bangladesh with their cars without paying duty, but the duty has to be paid if the car is not taken out of the country before the deadline of the facility expires.
