DHAKA: Five Indian nationals were sentenced to three years in jail for their involvement in gold smuggling between India and Bangladesh, court officials said Monday.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Almas Hossain Mridha passed the verdict Sunday asking the authorities to deposit the gold recovered from their possessions to the public exchequer.
The court also fined Tk 10,000 each for their offences. The convicts are Bijoy Kumar, Kamal, Ramkumar Golabmal and Rohit Ashok of Nagpur and Rakshe Laxman of Ahmadabad.
Public prosecutor Rafiqul Islam said the five confessed to their gilts after a case filed in connection with gold smuggling. According to the case Border Guard Bangladesh seized 4.4 kg of gold from the possession of the Indian nationals on June 22, 2014.
They were arrested and produced before the court for trial. Investigators formally indicted the five for gold smuggling on January 1, 2015.
