Customs to move court for cancellation of bail granted to the accused

KARACHI: Muhammad Ali Chandna, a prime suspect in a much publicised case of import of banned antibiotic, is likely be presented before Customs Court today (Monday). In the previous hearing,  the Customs Court judge had ordered the suspect to appear before the court for questioning.

It may be mentioned here that despite assurances, Chandna did not appear before the court.

According to the details, a joint investigation team comprising officials of Appraising Intelligence Branch (AIB) of Model Customs Collectorate Appraisement-West and Research & Development (R&D) Section of Appraisement-East in May-2015 presented a challan against Muhammad Ali Chandna before the Customs Court in which the customs authorities sought appearance of the prime suspect before court for questioning.

It is pertinent to mention here that several hearings into the case have already been conducted by the judge of the Customs Court for the last three months. However; the prime suspect Muhammad Ali Chandna has not yet attended a single hearing into the case.

In the last hearing, the investigation officer of AIB/R&D requested the court to issue order for the appearance of accused in the court and also took sign on an undertaking from the counsel that he would present Chandna before the court in next hearing i.e. on June-8.

It may be mentioned here that the Research and Development (R&D) Section of Model Customs Collectorate Appraisement-East has also decided to move the Customs Court for rejection of the bail granted to accused in highly sensitive case.

Sources informed that the R&D Section with the consent of Collector Manzoor Hussain Memon has prepared a draft for the rejection of the bail which is likely to be presented before the Customs Court in the next hearing of the case.

It is pertinent to mention here that the investigation team of Pakistan Customs Services earlier arrested another accused Bukht Khan from Swat and had brought him before the court for recording of his statement.

In the court statement, Bukht Khan said he was a driver, who used to load the imported consignments of banned antibiotics and off-loaded it to the godown of the importer.

The Customs Court after legal proceedings freed Bukht Khan, as none of the allegations found against him.
