BRUSSELS: The chief executive of Comeos, the Belgian trade and services federation has welcomed a study that looks into the possibility of creating a unified retail market for the Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg economies.

The study, Benelux Retail 2025, was praised by Dominique Michel, the chief executive of Comeos, who said, “we welcome the idea of a unified retail market for Benelux.”

Michel noted that a united Benelux retail market would greatly benefit traders and could prove a ‘springboard’ to launching a similar initiative across the rest of Europe.

“By 2025, a unified retail market could create 95,000 new jobs and 36,000 new businesses in the sector,” he said. “This market would also offer the opportunity to tackle major issues together, such as Big Data and the disruptive economy.”

In February, Christian Verschueren, director general of EuroCommerce, also lent his support to the report, saying “action by Benelux to create a Single Market for the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg can show the way for Europe at a time when the EU urgently needs new impetus to create growth and jobs.”
