Belgium firm Aertssen awarded $65m Hamad port project

BRUSSELS: Gulf Earth Moving, a Qatar-based subsidiary of the Belgian group Aertssen, have been awarded a US $65.6-million contract by the New Port Project Steering Committee (NPPSC) for 3-million square metres of extra terrain to be created for the New Qatar Emiri Naval Base at the Hamad Port.

The contract signing ceremony was held in the presence of Jassim Seif Ahmed al-Sulaiti, the minister of transport, and Princess Astrid of Belgium the second child of King Albert II and Queen Paola, and the sister of the current Belgian monarch, King Philippe. The contract was signed by Moyassar Jameel al-Qattamy, Hamad Port Project’s acting executive director and Gorgeous Aertssen, CEO, Gulf Earth Moving Company.

Gulf Earth Moving Company “will install a causeway, a coastal protection by means of armour rocks over a length of 1,350m and undertake the necessary soil improvements before filling the lagoon area with 9mn cu m of processed materials” according to part of the contract document.

Moreover, we are honoured with this award from the New Port Project Steering Committee.”

The New Port Project includes three container terminals with a combined annual capacity in excess of six million containers per year and a railway station connected to the GCC railway network. The rail link connects the New Port to the other Arabian Gulf States.
