TORONTO: BlackBerry has introduced a new all-touch smartphone called the BlackBerry Leap. And apparently, this is a budget-friendly handset from the Canadian tech giant at the Mobile World Congress 2015. BlackBerry Ltd posted a narrower-than-expected loss as the troubled smartphone maker’s turnaround efforts started to pay off, raising hopes its chief executive can deliver on a pledge to return the company to steady profits.
The BlackBerry device that no one really knows about is the one that was briefly shown off and featured a curved screen, as well as a sliding keyboard. While it looked incredibly large in comparison – given the fact that it was sliding out a full-blown keyboard – it seems as though it is something that will work well with BlackBerry users. That being said though, the more exciting move was the one that brought the BlackBerry Leap to light.
The BlackBerry Leap features some impressive features and is a mid-range device – that means it will compete with the likes of the Microsoft Lumia 640 and the 640 XL. The phone features a 5-inch 720p display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, as well as 16GB of internal storage. the phone is also an impressive device – as the processor rings in at 1.5GHz. The rear camera boasts an 8MP shooter, and the front-facing camera boasts a 2MP shooter. While none of those specs seem overwhelmingly spectacular – they do deliver on a number of fronts.
Interestingly, the BlackBerry leap features software that ensures user’s information is kept safe with built-in malware. It runs BlackBerry OS 10.3.1 and will definitely not have any trouble with tasks that an ordinary BlackBerry would be able to handle. Ultimately, this comes down to an interesting point – where its success will vary depending on how much interest is expressed within the smartphone community in a BlackBerry device.
