NEW YORK: Get ready to catch the glimpse of a second blue moon. It would be the end of July that would feature the second blue moon, which would appear in the skies on the 31st of this month at 6:43 am.
A blue moon occurs every two and a half years on an average. Second full moon occurs within a month in a lunar month, which has 29 days instead of 30 days of a calendar month.Earlier, the blue moon, as per The Maine Farmer’s Almanac, was the appearance of the third of four full moons in a season. However, in modern description it pertains to the second moon.
It was called the blue moon because of an instance that occurred in 1883, when the Indonesian volcano named Krakatoa exploded. Plumes of ash rose to the top of Earth’s atmosphere and made the moon appear to be blue for months and years afterwards. This phenomenon could happen when particles slightly wider than 0.7 micron were released in the air that colored the moon at night. It couldalso be seen during large forest fires.
The term blue moon stemmed from a March 1946 issue of Sky and Telescope magazine, which contained an article called “Once in a Blue Moon”.The author of the article actually simplified the definition of the moon, and it was later used in a radio show in the late 1970s to talk about a second blue moon in a month.
