LONDON: Scientists conducted many studies to know about humans’ distant ancestors. Through thousands of years old DNA, they have learned a lot about them. Now, scientists have conducted a new research which showed that Stone Age Britons imported wheat about 8,000 years ago.
According to British scientists, they have found traces of wheat DNA in a Stone Age site off the south coast of England. The discovery showed that there was a contact between ancient hunter-gatherers and farmers. As per the new study, the wheat DNA was dated to about 8,000 years ago.
Robin Allaby, researcher at the University of Warwick and co-author of the study, said, “This is a smoking gun of cultural interaction between primitive hunter-gatherers in Britain and farmers in Europe. It will upset archaeologists. The conventional view of Britain at the time was that it was cut off”. According to Allaby, researchers can only guess how the humans’ distant ancestors got wheat.
As per some reports, Britain was connected to Europe by land during the Ice Age. About 10,000 years ago, melting icecaps pushed seas higher. Farming had started in the Near East approximately 10,500 years ago. The reports stated that farming had reached Europe about 9,000 years ago. Locals in Britain had started farming about 6,000 years ago.
