SOFIA: Bulgarian customs officials at Lesovo checkpoint seized 246 kg of pseudoephedrine tablets, the largest amount of pseudoephedrine found and seized at the country’s border ever, officials said here the other day.
Inspectors found the drugs, a precursor for amphetamine production, in a truck with Polish registration carrying textiles from Turkey to Hungary, the National Customs Agency said in a press release.
After x-ray checks, the inspectors found cardboard boxes containing some 405,000 pseudoephedrine tablets hidden in the cargo.
The drivers, both Bulgarians, were arrested.
The previous highest amount of pseudoephedrine tablets, 112.6 kg, was seized by Bulgarian customs at Danube Bridge checkpoint in February 2014.
Bulgaria is a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe.
