Bulgaria seizes 3 tons of illegal hookah tobacco

SOFIA:  Bulgarian customs officers in the Black Sea port of Burgas have captured three tons of undeclared hookah tobacco, officials said here on Thursday. The tobacco, split into 3,000 boxes of one kg each, was discovered on Wednesday after an X-ray examination of a container with furniture coming from Dubai, the National Customs Agency said in a press release.

Authorities estimated the value of the seized tobacco would exceed 640,000 U.S. dollars. In addition, an excise of 271,000 U.S. dollars should be paid. Authorities have confiscated the container. Due to its location, Bulgaria is a major destination for traffickers, with more than 3.7 tons of drugs, 43.9 million illegal cigarettes and 51.7 tons of smuggled tobacco seized by in 2016.
