SOFIA: Labrador Gerard and his master from Customs – Sofia won the first prize in the room search discipline in the frames of a special competition for customs’ dogs held in Moldova in the frames of the international Conference Together in the Fight against Tobacco Smuggling, the press office of the Bulgarian Customs Agency announced.
13 dogs took part in the competition, representing the customs services of eight countries – Bulgaria, Romania, the Czech Republic, Russia, Moldova, Ukraine, Georgia and Hungary.
The four-legged customs inspectors competed in two categories – search for cigarettes and drugs, presenting their skills in four major disciplines – luggage search, car search, room search and obedience.
The Bulgarian representative – Gerard, performed best in the room search, discovering all hidden cigarettes in less than two minutes.
The Labrador of the Sofia Customs ranked second in the general ranking. This was Gerard’s first participation in an international competition in the search for cigarettes discipline.
The five-year old dog is one of the first two dogs in Bulgaria to be trained in search and discovery of cigarettes. Gerard has been working at Sofia Customs for four years, together with his brother Mark.
