MULTAN: Director, Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI) Multan Dr. Zahid Mahmood advised farmers not to burn the post-harvest remains of wheat crop.
In a statement issued here Wednesday, Dr. Zahid explained that burning remains of wheat crop would also kill the germs that are useful for the soil. However, burying it in soil after the machine harvest would improve the quantity of organic material in the soil.
To bury the sticks left by wheat crop after the harvest, farmers should apply Disc Harrow instead of Rotovator.
Farmers should remember that they should spread the remains (sticks) in the form of smaller heaps on the field in a uniform pattern after the machine harvest and then apply the Disc Harrow. Later, farmers should apply half or full bag of Urea per acre and then apply water. Disc Harrow be applied again when the soil is moist or wet and then land be prepared by cultivator for sowing of cotton crop through drill.
Burying wheat remains in soil not only improves organic material but also Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potash besides micronutrients. It improves growth of plants, resistance against diseases till the end and thus gives higher production, the release concluded.
