A major shift has been seen on the political horizon as Muttahida Qaumi Movement Chief Altaf Hussain has announced his support for the construction of Kalabagh Dam, urging the government to complete this project after removing the reservations of the Sindh people. The country has been facing shortage of electricity for the last many decades, but the recent heat wave in Karachi, in which hundreds of people have been killed, has made the matter worse than anything. The politicians on the political divide are blaming one another for the deaths, but no one is ready to pinpoint the real causes of the problem. The credit goes only to the MQM chief, who has demanded the federation to summon a joint meeting of experts from all the four provinces to address the reservations of Sindh people over the construction of Kalabagh Dam. Altaf also said that it was not for the first time that people were dying of severe heat stroke in metropolis as prolonged power outages and gas crisis had also landed the people of Karachi in trouble several times in the past.
This is not the first time a voice of reasons has been raised in the country. Earlier, PML-Q leader Chaudhry Pervez Elahi had also demanded the government develop consensus among the provinces and start the construction of Kalabagh Dam. There is a need to bring all the politicians, who are opposing the construction of Kalabagh Dam, on the media and should be asked why they were opposing the construction of a vital project in Pakistan. These politicians never speak against India which has dried up rivers which pass through its territory. There is a need to persuade ANP chief Asfandyar Wali to stop opposing the construction of Kalabagh Dam. After all it is also his country and the construction will also benefit Khyber Pakhtunkwa.
The unfortunate part of the situations is that the officials of the federal and provincial governments are blaming one another for the problem but have failed to provide a valid solution. No effort has been made by the Sindh government to ensure water supply in the worst-hit areas where electricity has been absent for the last many days. So far only a construction tycoon has announced compensation for the victim families in Karachi whereas all the politicians are playing politics without offering anything to the affected people. This the time the nation should unite against anti-Pakistan politicians and they should be voted out from politics forever.
