OTTAWA: Police are urging Kamloops residents to be cautious with their personal information after receiving dozens of reports of phone scams from crooks posing as the tax man.
RCMP Cpl. Jodi Shelkie said Kamloops Mounties are receiving up to 15 reports daily from people who say they have received threatening and harassing phone calls from someone posing as an employee with the Canada Revenue Agency.
“Citizens should be aware that the Canada Revenue Agency will never ask for any kind of payment to be wired to them or for prepaid credit cards,” Shelkie said.
“People should hang up on these callers immediately as they can become very aggressive once you engage in a conversation with them.”
Shelkie said other scammers tell people they have a CRA refund for them and ask for personal information for payment.
Shelkie urges anyone who thinks they have been a victim of fraud to call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
