OTTAWA: Canada stocks were higher after the close on Friday, as gains in the Materials, Energy and Industrials sectors led shares higher. At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite gained 0.65%. The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Fortuna Silver Mines Inc (TO:FVI), which rose 7.64% or 0.48 points to trade at 6.76 at the close. Meanwhile, Gran Tierra Energy Inc . (TO:GTE) added 6.30% or 0.170 points to end at 2.870 and Yamana Gold Inc (TO:YRI) was up 6.01% or 0.20 points to 3.53 in late trade. The worst performers of the session were BlackBerry Ltd (TO:BB), which fell 12.28% or 1.80 points to trade at 12.86 at the close. Hudson’s Bay Company (TO:HBC) declined 5.36% or 0.64 points to end at 11.29 and Home Capital Group Inc . (TO:HCG) was down 2.05% or 0.39 points to 18.61.
Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 664 to 425 and 124 ended unchanged. The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 5.52% to 12.33. Gold Futures for August delivery was up 0.66% or 8.21 to $1257.61 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in August rose 0.89% or 0.38 to hit $43.12 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 1.02% or 0.46 to trade at $45.68 a barrel. CAD/USD was down 0.24% to 0.7538, while CAD/EUR fell 0.65% to 0.6732. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.31% at 96.96.
