OTTAWA: Canada stocks were higher after the close on Friday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Consumer Staples sectors led shares higher. At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite rose 1.20%. The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Bonavista Energy Corp (TO:BNP), which rose 16.99% or 0.440 points to trade at 3.030 at the close. Meanwhile, Sierra Wireless Inc . (TO:SW) added 14.52% or 4.94 points to end at 38.97 and Enerplus Corporation (TO:ERF) was up 10.47% or 0.94 points to 9.92 in late trade. The worst performers of the session were Great-West Lifeco Inc . (TO:GWO), which fell 5.48% or 2.00 points to trade at 34.47 at the close. Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers Inc . (TO:RBA) declined 4.16% or 1.830 points to end at 42.160 and Russel Metals Inc . (TO:RUS) was down 3.25% or 0.88 points to 26.23. Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 684 to 451 and 124 ended unchanged.
The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 5.19% to 12.23. Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.14% or 1.71 to $1230.31 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 2.07% or 0.94 to hit $46.46 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 2.07% or 1.00 to trade at $49.38 a barrel. CAD/USD was up 0.66% to 0.7321, while CAD/EUR rose 0.57% to 0.6658. The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.17% at 98.44.
