Canada truck driver pleaded guilty in human smuggling case at Niagara border

OTTAWA: A Canadian truck driver pleaded guilty last week to making a false statement to U.S. Customs and Border Protection after an Albanian couple was discovered hiding in his tractor-trailer at the Peace Bridge.

Tonin Ndoja, 50, crossed the bridge Nov. 12 with a shipment of rolled steel.The trailer.Ndoja, 50, pleaded guilty in a Buffalo court to making a false statement to authorities. He’ll return to court March 30 for sentencing.He faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.Court heard he was a Free and Secure Trade card-holder and member of the CBP’s Trusted Traveler Program, which offers expedited travel for pre-approved, low-risk travellers.
