OTTAWA: Volkswagen is recalling about 41,300 vehicles in Canada and another 420,000 in the U.S. to fix a fault that could prevent airbags from deploying in a crash.
It announced Friday that the recall would affect:
2010-2014 Volkswagen CC, Passat and Tiguan.
2010-2013 Eos and Jetta.
2011-2014 Golf and GTI.
2011-2013 Jetta SportWagen.
The automaker said debris may contaminate the airbag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the airbag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This could result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver’s frontal airbag and it might not deploy properly in an accident.
Volkswagen said no deaths or injuries had been reported in connection with the fault. The recall is listed on Transport Canada’s database.
Volkswagen is currently the world’s largest automaker, outstripping Toyota for that title earlier this year.
In Canada, sales to July 2015 totalled 43,592, a 13.8 per cent increase from the previous year.
