The automaker said debris may contaminate the airbag clock spring, a spiral wound, flat cable that keeps the airbag powered while the steering wheel is being turned. This could result in a loss of electrical connection to the driver’s frontal airbag and it might not deploy properly in an accident.

Volkswagen is currently the world’s largest automaker, outstripping Toyota for that title earlier this year.

In Canada, sales to July 2015 totalled 43,592, a 13.8 per cent increase from the previous year.
