Canadian authorities seize 880,000 contraband cigarettes

MANITOBA: Manitoba Finance has seized more than 880,000 contraband cigarettes following two busts this month.

The department’s investigators stopped a cargo van near West Hawk Lake this week and uncovered more than 2,000 cartons of cigarettes, as well as 2,250 “baggies,” according to the Manitoba Finance Taxation special investigations unit.

The van was impounded and one man is facing charges under the Manitoba Tobacco Tax Act.

In another bust on Nov. 16, 81 baggies and 80 cartons were seized from an apartment in Winnipeg’s south St. Vital area.

One man was charged in connection with that seizure as well.

Both could face fines and jail time.
