OTTAWA: Canadian border officers say they caught a drug smuggling trucker this week as he allegedly tried to sneak 52 kilograms of cocaine into Windsor.

“This seizure was outstanding work by all involved and demonstrates that CBSA officers are vigilant in protecting our borders 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” said Rick Comerford, the CBSA’s regional director general of the Southern Ontario region. “Our officers work hard to combat illegal activity at our borders and are dedicated to keeping our streets and communities safe.”

The Canada Border Services Agency caught the 26-year-old trucker on Monday. Officers sent him to secondary inspection and allegedly found 52 bricks of cocaine stuffed into three duffel bags and a tote inside a storage area.

Officers seized the drugs, arrested the trucker and called the RCMP to take him into custody.

Lavdrim Mehmeti, of Scarborough, is charged with importing cocaine and possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
