NEW BEDFORD: Where two villages have been destroyed by lava the community of Cape Verdean in Luxembourg assisted relief efforts for victims of a volcano outbreak on the island of Fogo.
The Pico do Fogo eruption forced around 1,500 people to flee their homes, with lava sweeping through the villages Bangeira and Portela.
Located off the coast of West Africa, a forest reserve and coffee-producing area is now threatened by the lava, which continues to move forward.
Volunteers from around a dozen Cape Verdean associations in Luxembourg gathered at Portuguese supermarket Primavera in Gasperich this weekend to collect food for the victims of the natural disaster.
Shoppers were handed plastic bags entering the supermarket and were asked to fill them with essentials, such as non-perishable foods and hygiene products, and drop them back off at the exit.
The coordinators of the project were overwhelmed by the generosity of shoppers, many of whom decided to pick up products native to Cape Verde, which the supermarket also sells – a particularly touching gesture, volunteers said.
