OTTAWA: Officers from the Canada Border Services Agency have charged a Minnesota man with smuggling firearms after a vehicle search last week at the Fort Frances, Ont. crossing uncovered two undeclared handguns.
The man and a friend had come to the Fort Frances port of entry to apply for Remote Area Border Crossing Permits.
After declaring nothing, the vehicle was referred for a secondary examination.
Officers then found a prohibited 9 mm handgun and a restricted .22 calibre handgun and three magazines.
The passenger was released after officers determined that the passenger was unaware of the handguns in the vehicle.
The driver claimed ownership of both handguns leading to several charges for the 63 year old.
The firearms were seized and the man was released on a promise to appear.
His first court appearance is May 4th in Fort Frances.
