BEIJING: A man has been arrested on the border in Shenzhen after he allegedly tried to smuggle 18 iPhone Plus smartphones into the mainland inside the frame of his bike.
The man was pushing his bicycle through a passenger hall here the other day when he was stopped by security officers for a routine check, according to a statement released by Guangdong province’s anti-smuggling bureau.
Officers said the man was extremely nervous and began to stammer when they asked him questions.
They found that the frame sounded muffled when they tapped it and the phones were discovered after they looked inside the frame.
The man has confessed to smuggling, according to the statement, and the investigation is continuing.
The iPhones would have cost at least HK$115,000 in total if bought at an Apple store in Hong Kong.
No details were given about the suspect.
