BEIJING: A man has been caught trying to smuggle hundreds of turtles across borders into China.
The smuggler was apprehended on July 16 at Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou city, southern China, reported People’s Daily Online.
259 live turtles were seized altogether. This included 247 Indian roofed turtles and 12 black pond turtles
Customs officials got a surprise when two pieces of luggage, filled with odd-shaped objects, passed through the X-Ray machines.
When they opened up the suspicious bags, they discovered 259 live turtles inside.
The man who owns the luggage was travelling from Dhaka, Bangledesh, into China.
The reptiles, considered to be endangered, were seized by customs officers at the border.
It’s not known what will happen to them.
