BEIJING: Chinese customs officers at a Shenzhen checkpoint bordering Hong Kong have seized more than a tonne of silver worth some 3.5 million yuan from a truck trying to cross the border.
The officers were alerted on the morning of April 27, when their alarm system was activated as the refrigerator truck passed through the Huanggang checkpoint, People’s Daily reported on its website here the other day.
After the vehicle was emptied for inspection, further scans revealed something suspicious under its cooling engine.
Officers eventually found 66 silver plates – each weighing about 16kg – in the truck.
The total amount of silver found amounted to 1.032 tonnes, marking the largest metal-smuggling case handled by the Huanggang customs.
The driver of the truck was detained, according to the report.
