ISLAMABAD: Excise and Taxation Department has decided introduce a chip-based Smart Card system for the Vehicles registration in Pakistan by May.

A senior official of Excise and Taxation Department told APP that the administration had prepared a database of over 700,000 vehicles to introduce multi-security chip-based system for a trial period of two months.

Most probably, by May a chip-based Smart Card will replace the ubiquitous book, he said.

The official added the smart card would also helpful law enforcement agencies for security purposes as it would carry the details about vehicle, its owner and security features, making tempering impossible.

“It will also check the rampant fake vehicle registration papers and number plates,” he added.

He said work on the system was started after the city administration signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) early this year.

The idea of digitizing the vehicle registration system was being discussed for many years as a tool to check fraud and misuse of vehicles in crime and terror attacks.
