NEW DELHI: The Chittoor taluk police on Monday arrested four red sanders smugglers, including three women, and seized an SUV and four logs worth over Rs.7 lakh during regular vehicles checking at Murakambattu on the outskirts of Chittoor.
Addressing a press conference, Chittoor DSP Lakhsmi Naidu and Taluk Circle Inspector M.M. Chandrasekhar said that the accused were identified as C. Annamalai (34), Ranjitamma (30), Palaniyamma (40), and Theerthi (40), all from Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu.
The police said that three accused — Murthy and Palanivelu, and Annamalai of Dharmapuri district hatched a plan to smuggle the logs and successfully crossed the check-posts by ferrying women in vehicles in the guise of passengers. They engaged the services of three women from their district for the purpose.
The officials said that it was for the first time that three women were caught in the racket.
The four accused were remanded in Chittoor jail after producing them before the local court.
