MULTAN: Director General Agriculture (Research) Dr Abid has said that the country was facing loss of Rs 10 billion annually because of impurities in cotton.
He said women would be given training for clean picking of cotton in near future. He said agriculture sector is mainstay of country’s economy. Its share in exports is nearly 70 per cent and added that cotton exporters faces loss of two to three cents / pound at international market. This loss is due to presence of impurities in our cotton.
He informed that Pakistan was producing world’s best cotton varieties. The farmers should cultivate only recommended varieties. He proposed farmers to plough deep and maintain health of soil after consultation with experts. The cotton must be sown in beds. The farmers should sow recommended number of plants and plants height should not be more than 4 and half feet. The DG research stressed the peasants to complete cotton sowing by May 20.
