COLOMBO: Sri Lanka Ports Authority says container operations in the Colombo port has increased by 5.7 percent last year over the previous year.
Accordingly, the total amount of containers handled by the port last year is 5,185,467 compared to the 4,907,915 containers handled in 2014.
Total container volume comprises of import, export containers and transshipments.
In 2015, Import and export container volume has been increased by 8.1 percent to 1,217,971.
Container transshipment volumes have also been increased by 4.9 percent to 3,967,496 in the year 2015.
Sri Lanka Ports Authority said the growth was mainly due to the strong management and commitment of the employees at the Colombo harbor.
The Ports and Shipping Minister Arjuna Ranatunga said a new plan for employee promotions is to be introduced soon after studying the current human resource plan.
