COLOMBO: The annual throughput of the Colombo International Container Terminals Limited (CICT) has exceeded one million TEUs, which is a historical milestone recorded in CICT’s history, a statement said here on Thursday.
The figure was achieved by sustaining a throughput volume of the containers, which grew year-on-year by 143 percent for the first eight months, the statement by the CICT said.
“Given the deep water advantage, which allowed the mega container carriers to call over at CICT, together with the state- of-the-art terminal facilities and its geographical position, CICT provided an efficient service keeping to expected international standards,” the statement said.
The state of the art container terminal operated by CICT contributed largely to the throughput increases witnessed by the Colombo port. Furthermore, the entry of new shipping lines calling over at the CICT, together with the increased throughput has ensured that Colombo would be the transshipment hub of South Asia and would also greatly contribute to the setting up of Marina Center in Sri Lanka.
Liu Yunshu, CEO of CICT, expressed confidence in CICT’s further development and progress whereby being the leading container terminal and ranking the number one terminal in Sri Lanka.
