COLUMBUS: The Lowndes County Port Authority says companies that bought a failed biofuel plant in Columbus hope to have the 22-acre site cleaned by the end of the year. Georgia Renewable Power bought about 75 percent of KiOR’s equipment for $2.1 million. Renewable Energy Group paid $1.6 million for the rest — mainly a 120-foot-tall structure covering about half a city block.
The two companies have missed three deadlines to clear the site. The Commercial Dispatch (http://bit.ly/2dp7cBj ) reports that they referred questions to port authority director Will Sanders. He says they’re all on the same page and expect to have the site cleared by Dec. 31. Their rent goes up each month until the site is clear. KiOR never produced biofuel. It filed for bankruptcy in 2014.
