The study also identified a germ behind increasing cases of corneal ulcers in the skin, calling for more eye hygiene among lens users.
The team at NYU Langone Medical Center in New Orleans identified microorganisms in the contact lens users’ eye which more closely resemble those found on the skin of non-wearers.
In the people who wore contact lenses, this composition more closely resembled the bacteria on the individuals’ eyelids, as compared to the nonwearers.
“Our research clearly shows that putting a foreign object, such as a contact lens, on the eye is not a neutral act,” study author Maria Gloria Dominguez-Bello, a microbiologist at NYU Langone Medical Center, said in a statement.
“Despite being important in ophthalmology, the eye microbiome has been largely neglected, and its functions remain unknown,” she concluded.
