Costa Rica imports avocados from Peru

COSTA RICA: Avocado imports, since June 2015 and after the ban on Mexican Hass avocado, have mainly concentrated in Peru. Costa Rica has imported 3.26 million dollars in avocados between June and October this year, according to preliminary data from the National Production Council (CNP).

Arlyne Alfaro, director of the NPC Agricultural Information, advanced some data, since the report is not fully ready.

There were no imports of avocado from Peru between January and June. In that period, Costa Rica purchased 11.54 million dollars of Mexican Hass. The volume of purchases from Mexico totalled 5,984 tons.

From June to October, the volume of purchases in Peru amounted to 1,682 tons, according to data compiled by the Market Information Service of CNP. Between August and October, Costa Rica purchased 252 tons of avocados worth $665,000 dollars from Chile.

Costa Rica purchased 1,930 tons of avocados for $119,000 dollars from Nicaragua between January and September. Purchases in Nicaragua are not of the Hass variety, but of the Creole variety.

The average price for Hass avocado at the Farmer’s Fair, in January 2015, was 1.483 ¢ per kilo. They rose to 2.368 ¢ per kilo in June but fell to 1.748 ¢ in September, according to the CNP.
