Court extends physical remand of suspect involved in mobile phones smuggling

KARACHI: Customs Court Judge Syed Faiz Rasool Rashdi has extended physical remand of a suspect namely Khuram Ali Raza, son of Muhammad Aslam, who was booked in a case of attempting to smuggle 116 foreign-origin mobile phones from Korea to Karachi via Doha by Qatar Airline.

During the hearing, investigation officer produced the above-mentioned suspects before the court and informed that suspect arrived at Jinnah International Airport Karachi from Korea via Doha by Qatar Airline who was intercepted by IPS green channel and was asked to declare whether he is carrying any contraband goods in his baggage or on his person, which he denied.

Investigation officer further informed that during the search, customs officials recovered 51 LG mobile phones, 09 I-phone, 07 Huawei mobile phones and 49 Samsung mobile phones valuing at Rs1,322,400 from his baggage, therefore, after the formalities, he was arrested and the said goods were seized by customs authorities.

He requested the court that prosecution needs further prosecution from him, therefore, court may send him to customs department on physical remand, after the hearing, court handed him over to customs department on physical remand and directed investigation officer to complete investigations within 14 days and submit progress report along with suspect on next date of hearing.

Case was registered against him and other yet to be ascertained for violation of section 2 (s), 16 & 139 of the customs act, punishable under clauses (8) (89) & (70) of section 156 (i) ibid, read with baggage rules notified vide SRO-666(I)/2006, dated 28.06,2006 & section 3 (iii) of Import & Export (Control) Act, 1950.
