MEXICO: Wispy bright regions scattered on the moon’s surface — were created by several comet collisions over the last 100 million years.
In a paper published in the journal Icarus, the researchers use state-of-the-art computer models to simulate the dynamics of comet impacts on the lunar soil.
Researchers from Brown University — Providence, R.I. — recently discovered that the mysterious swirls all over the Moon may have been caused by crashing comets.
Comets have been suspected as the cause in the past, but the swirls dont quite appear to be impact craters and this appearance may have fueled the mystery surrounding them.
Schultz co-wrote the paper with his former graduate student, Megan Bruck-Syal, who is now a researcher at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
The simulations gave way to information about how comet impacts could very possibly explain the mysterious features — particularly the swirls on the Moon.
Most are on the unseen far side of the moon, but one famous swirl called Reiner Gamma can be seen by telescopes on the moon’s near side.
Based on Apollo Schultzs said his comet theory was based on watching the lunar modules land during the Apollo program.
